New Adwords Social Extension Displays Google +1's In PPC Ads

Posted by JustinV

Hey there Mozzers! Today I'm going to talk about how to link your new Google+ Business Page to your Google AdWords account so you can start utilizing the new social extension feature.

As we all know, Google+ has been hard at work lately trying to increase their user base and trying to close the gap between them and Facebook. Over the past few weeks they have moved one step closer by rolling out their Google+ business pages – basically the equivalent to Facebook business profiles.

Now, before I go any further, I want to state a quick disclaimer; social extensions are brand new within AdWords and the folks over at Google are still ironing out the kinks. There are still many questions around how they will evolve over the next several months, but for now I will do my best to explain what social extensions are, how to set them up, and what they can do for your PPC performance.

What Are AdWords Social Extensions?

Google's Updated Menu Bar

You may be just getting used to the new black menu bar that Google launched in June, but don’t get attached. According to Google, the menu bar is going through another redesign and the black bar you have been seeing for the past few months is about to disappear, and it could happen at any time.

I’m not seeing it yet, but Google was nice enough to include a picture of what the new bar will look like in their blog post.

The new Google bar will sit in the same place as the black bar did but links to various services will appear in a new drop-down menu. If the service you need does not appear in the menu, simply hover over the “More” link at the bottom of the list.

What do you think about Google's latest rounds of design changes? Are they an improvement over the way Google products used to look?

To learn more about the new menu, Google has released the following video or visit their Help Center.

2nd November Index Update: Our Broadest Index Yet, and New PA/DA Scores are Live

Posted by randfish

Hey gang – it's that magical time again when Linkscape's web index has updated with brand new data (for the second time this month). Open Site Explorer, the Mozbar and the PRO Web App all have new links and scores to check out. This index also features the updated Page Authority and Domain Authority models covered by Matt last week on the blog.

Here's the current index's metrics:

  • 38,295,116,929 (38 billion) URLs

  • 466,742,600 (466 million) Subdomains

  • 125,007,049 (125 million) Root Domains

  • 387,379,700,299 (387 billion) Links

  • Followed vs. Nofollowed

    • 2.03% of all links found were nofollowed

    • 55.57% of nofollowed links are internal, 44.43% are external

  • Rel Canonical – 10.34% of all pages now employ a rel=canonical tag

  • The average page has 70.61 links on it (down 6.67 from last index; we're likely biasing to a different set of webpages with the broader vs. deeper focus of this release)

    • 59.02 internal links on average

    • 11.59 external links on average

What Every SEO Should Know About IIS

IIS Server through the eyes of an SEO

Disclaimer: This post is long and technical, but has been lovingly paraphrased for the benefit of non-technical SEOs to get involved and step out of their comfort zone. Recently, I’ve had to deal with sites running on IIS and rather than just prescribing universal SEO fixes, I decided to get my hands really, really dirty. This is what I’ve learned…

Introducing SERP Turkey: A Free Tool to Split-Test and Gather CTR Analytics of SERP Entries

Measuring CTR data in search engine results is notoriously difficult, and with Google's recent move to HTTPS for logged in users it's only going to get worse.

The problems include, but are not limited to:

  • How can you record the clicks?

  • How can you know what position you were in?

  • What snippet was shown?

  • What did the other entries look like?

  • What ads were shown?

There are so many factors and no good way to gather the data meaning that the signal-to-noise ratio basically makes the exercise worthless. Furthermore, the delay in making changes (trying a new title, for instance) and getting data is simply agonizing.

What I wanted was a simple way to measure the change in CTR for a given search query's results when I adjusted entries, but nothing existed…. so I built it. I think I got pretty close to what I wanted; it isn't perfect but it is quick, cheap and the… Read the rest

Gaming Social Media Signals For Fun And Profit

Posted by joehall

About two weeks ago I gave a talk at Pubcon titled, "Global Social Media Signals For SEO". During the end of the talk I briefly mentioned several techniques used to "game" social signals. Afterwards it was apparent that many were interested to learn more about gaming these signals. So without further ado, I would like to talk more about how to game social media signals.

Oh wait a second! It looks like I got a little ahead of myself, before we go any further I think we should try to answer one question:

Why should anyone try to game social media signals?

If you are a giant dork (like moi), then gaming social media signals can be fun! However, if you have friends in the real world then I would suggest you try… Read the rest
